Many people believe that the black slime coating their filters is algae. This is a popular misconception. Fuel sludge is formed when fuel molecules (molecules that were forced into solution by a great deal of energy during refining) return to a makeup similar to the crude oil it was refined from. Clusters of fuel molecules are formed by the combined effects of oxidation and microbial activity and are the cause of poor engine performance, clogged filters and tank sludge.
